Sen. Doug Jones of Alabama, who rocked national politics with his upset defeat of Republican Roy Moore in a special election in that state in December will be the keynote speaker at the Mississippi Democratic Party's Hamer-Winter Dinner on Jan. 27.
His narrow defeat of the controversial ultra right-wing Moore in what has been called the "Reddest State in America" sent shockwaves through Republican strategists and leaders, bolstering Democrats' hopes of major wins nationwide in the mid-term elections later this year.
Moore, former U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, also is renowned for his prosecution of two of the Ku Klux Klan perpetrators in the 1963 bombing of Street Baptist Church in Birmingham that killed four African-American girls.
